January 31, 2012: A recent study, led by Laurence McCahill, MD of Michigan State University's College of Human Medicine, The Lacks Cancer Center at Saint Mary's and Van Andel Research Institute, revealed substantial differences in rate for follow-up surgeries in women who underwent a partial mastectomy for treatment of breast cancer. Those differences can affect both cancer recurrence and overall survival rates.

About three-fourths of women battling breast cancer have a partial mastectomy, and nearly one in four at some point have another surgery (re-excision) to remove additional tissue. The additional operations can produce considerable physical and economic stress for patients and delay use of recommended supplemental therapies, according to the study.

September 2011: Dr. Jamie Caughran, medical director of the Comprehensive Breast Center at the Lacks Cancer Center, co-authored a study presented at the 2011 Breast Cancer Symposium in San Francisco.

The study found that mammograms and breast exams are important tools in the detection of breast cancer, even among women ages 40 to 49 for whom routine mammography has been questioned by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. The study describes the age and method of detection (mammogram vs palpable mass) in almost 6,000 women in the state of Michigan.

“While there has been ongoing debate about when and how breast cancer screening should occur, this study validates that women who undergo regular mammography screening present at earlier stages and often require less aggressive treatment than those who do not," Caughran said in a statement. "This is true for women older than 50 years, as well as women aged 40 to 49 years for whom routine mammography is questioned by the USPSTF. In addition, women of all ages presented with palpable tumors, highlighting the use of self-breast exam as an important public health measure.”
